Liberty’s Stomp Act song was really catchy, was it not? On the other hand, the actual Stamp Act did not go over so well in the American colonies. It was passed by British Parliament on March 22, 1765 and imposed a tax on every piece of printed-paper used by the colonists. This included things like ship’s papers, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, and even playing cards. The real issue however, was England taxing the colonies without their approval. The American colonists believed that if they did not resist this tax, they would lose their freedom.
