Libraries as very important to learning, but in America they were not always available. Benjamin Franklin along with some of his friends created the Library Company of Philadelphia on July 1, 1731. They ran into problems at first, as there were few books at the time in Pennsylvania. Franklin and his friends were not extremely wealthy and books from England were expensive to buy. So they pooled their resources and created a library that still exists today.
