The HMS Somerset was a ship that was part of the British Royal Navy. On the night of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride the HMS Somerset was anchored in the Charles River. Before Paul Revere could begin his ride he had to cross the Charles River in a small boat. He had to be very careful not to be seen by the ship. After the Battles of Lexington and Concord the HMS Somerset’s gun crew provided cover for the British troops’ retreat. The ship was eventually lost during the American Revolutionary War in 1778. If you were wondering, HMS is an acronym that stands for His/Her Majesty’s Ship.
